Early winter: Migratory birds start arriving in Chilika lake– Odisha Tourism Department
Migratory birds started arriving in Chilika lake. So far this year, more than 600,000 exotic birds have arrived in Lake Chilika. Eight species of birds have arrived, mainly from Iran, Mongolia, Russia, Afghanistan, and other parts of the northern hemisphere.
So far, 60,000 species of 45 species have arrived in the Hirakud Reservoir and 4,100 species of 12 species of birds have entered the Bhitarkanika area.
In addition, a small number of exotic birds have started flocking to the major reservoirs of the Mahanadi area, Berhampur, Cuttack, and Paralakhemundi forests. Among these birds are the Gendy, the Bajeni, the Gendalia, the Era, the Taurus, the Santial, the Da Bentia, the sea-goat, the Dadra Hana, and the Chukua Chakoi.
Various measures have been taken to ensure the safe movement and protection of exotic birds coming to Odisha. Twenty temporary bird protection camps have been set up by the Chilean Forest Service.
In other forests, birds are being protected by patrolling by anti-poaching squads and river squads. Fishing is prohibited in sensitive areas.
