A recent report which was published by the LIVING PLANET REPORT 2022 BY the World Wide Fund (WWF) For Nature shows that the wildlife population of the earth has declined by 69% in the last 50 years.
It includes a large variety of wildlife populations like birds, reptiles, fishes, etc.
The highest decline in wildlife was recorded in Latin America and the Caribbean region which is nearly 94%. As per the region-wise data, the decline of wildlife is highest in Africa which is 66 % between 1970-2018, followed by Asia which is 55 percent.
The freshwater species population has been reduced by 83 percent globally.
Key Threats to Biodiversity:
o WWF identified six key threats to biodiversity to highlight ‘threat hotspots’ for terrestrial vertebrates:
· Agriculture
· Hunting
· Logging
· Pollution
· Invasive Species
· Climate Change
Due to climate change, many species are now surviving their existence. Increases in temperature, pollution, loss of biodiversity, etc are the major cause behind the loss of wildlife.
