National Aquatic Animal of India – Gangetic River Dolphin
The dolphins of the River Ganga are the National Aquatic Animal of India. On 5th October 2009, the Central Government of India declared the river dolphin as the National Aquatic Animal of India. They are also called “Susu”.

Once upon a time, these dolphins are considered an endangered species. To save them the Central Government started as initiative “Namami Gange” to save the river Ganga is to save the life of many aquatic animals of river Ganga.
Facts about the National Aquatic Animal of India
Dolphins are mammals and depend upon aquatic food.
They are mainly found in the Ganges River and were officially discovered in 1801.
Other names- Susu, Blind Dolphin, Shostak
They live in freshwater bodies and can not breathe inside the water which is why they came to the surface to take a breath.
It is also the official animal of Guwahati.
As per WWF, their population is less than 1800 and due to pollution, their population is gradually decreasing.
The life span of this dolphin is nearly about 25-27 years.
