World Turtle Day – History, Theme & Significant

World Turtle Day - 2025

World Turtle Day is an annual event celebrated on 23rd May across the globe.  Let’s explore its history, theme, and significance.

History:
World Turtle Day was first celebrated on 23rd May, 2000, initiated by the American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) to raise awareness about the protection and conservation of turtles and tortoises.

Significance:
The main goal of this day is to spread awareness about rescuing and protecting turtles. As we all know, turtles play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. However, their survival is under serious threat due to climate change, global warming, and water pollution.

Species like the Olive Ridley turtles are now facing severe challenges. Events like World Turtle Day play an important role in educating people and encouraging efforts to protect turtles.

Things We Should Do to Save and Protect Turtles:

  • Create more and more awareness

  • Control water pollution

  • Restrict boats, ships, and similar water vehicles in sensitive areas

  • Create safe hatching sites for turtles

Let’s join hands to protect these ancient and gentle creatures of our planet.
